The older brother of the late NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez, who died in prison while serving a murder sentence, is now in some legal trouble of his own. Dennis “DJ” Hernandez has been accused of threatening to kill several individuals as well as planning to commit mass shootings at two New England universities.
On July 18, the Bristol Police Department in Bristol, Connecticut, received some disturbing reports about 37-year-old DJ Hernandez. At least two women had shown police text messages that indicated that Hernandez had been planning and threatening violence for some time, the affidavit said. According to the affidavit, Hernandez wrote the following text messages to unknown recipients:
- “Will I kill? Absolutely I’ve warned my enemies [to] pay up front.”
- “we’re taking lives if s*** isn’t paid up. It’s been years in planning just taking notes, names and locations. They talked their way into this and it’s almost point game.”
- “…when I go I’m taking down everything And don’t give a f*** who gets caught in the cross fire. I’ve died for [years] now and now it’s other peoples turn. I’m prepared to give my life.”
- “Not all shootings are bad I’m realizing. Some are necessary for change to happen.”
That woman expressed grave concerns about Hernandez’s “erratic” behavior and deteriorating mental health. She told police she did not necessarily want Hernandez arrested, but she hoped that he would receive “the help he needs,” the affidavit said.
The other woman, who had been dating Hernandez until a break-up earlier this month, claimed that he told her “he has a bullet for everyone, that he loves” her but warned her that she was not “safe,” the affidavit stated. The ex-girlfriend told police that she “didn’t feel threatened specifically” but believed that Hernandez was experiencing a “mental health crisis,” the police document added.
Fearing that Hernandez posed a threat to the community, police immediately went to Hernandez’s home in Bristol and removed two children who were in the home at the time. However, Hernandez would not answer the door. An officer was able to contact him via phone, but Hernandez warned the officer that he was armed and threatened to “kill us all (referring to the police,)” BPD said.
Hernandez eventually exited the home with his arm raised and repeatedly asked officers to “shoot him,” the affidavit said. They eventually tased him and took him to a nearby hospital for evaluation. After receiving treatment for effects of the taser, he was taken into custody and charged with threatening, breach of peace, and failure to appear in court.

This was Hernandez’s fourth arrest this year. He was first arrested back in March for allegedly throwing a brick with a threatening message at an ESPN building. When he reportedly failed to appear in court in May in connection with that incident, he was arrested yet again. He also supposedly attempted to evade police on another occasion, but the date of that alleged incident is unclear.
During his arrest for the alleged mass shooting threats on July 18, Hernandez supposedly told police that he would harm anyone who “profited off his brother Aaron,” including ESPN. Aaron Hernandez was once a star tight end for the University of Florida and won a BCS National Championship alongside teammate Tim Tebow in 2008. He then went on to the NFL and played in the Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the rest of the New England Patriots in 2012.
Throughout his college and professional career, though, Aaron Hernandez repeatedly found himself on the wrong side of the law. In 2013, he was indicted for the first-degree murder of Odin Lloyd and convicted in August 2015. He was also charged with other murders as well but was acquitted. On April 19, 2017, Aaron Hernandez hanged himself, and the attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was 27.
