The U.S. Supreme Court ruled against allowing colleges to consider an applicant’s race as a factor when making admissions decisions, but the left has been decrying the high court’s ruling.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the opinion that “the Harvard and UNC admissions programs cannot be reconciled with the guarantees of the Equal Protection Clause. Both programs lack sufficiently focused and measurable objectives warranting the use of race, unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points. We have never permitted admissions programs to work in that way, and we will not do so today.”
But Democrats have been denouncing the decision.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared in a tweet that “Roberts’ majority opinion does violence to justice and fairness in America.”
The Congressional Black Caucus, which is comprised entirely of Democrats, claimed that “the Supreme Court has thrown into question its own legitimacy.”
Democratic Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri asserted that the ruling “to end affirmative action in higher education is racist. Just like the Court has always been. Just like it was designed to be.”
“Study after study has shown that diverse student bodies produce more successful academic institutions and societal outcomes. Yet, extremists on the Supreme Court are once again more interested in jamming their right-wing ideology down the throats of the American people,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement.
President Joe Biden, who is running for re-election, said that he “strongly” disagrees with the ruling.
But while leftists have been blasting the ruling, Republicans have been hailing it.
GOP Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida called it “a massive win against the left’s equity agenda that seeks to achieve ‘equality’ through equal outcomes, not equal access,” adding, “There was clearly a time when affirmative action was needed to end racial discrimination, but that time is over. The High Court rightly ended this policy. Merit and achievement must be the #1 attribute we all desire.”
“College admissions should be based on merit and applicants should not be judged on their race or ethnicity. The Supreme Court has correctly upheld the Constitution and ended discrimination by colleges and universities,” tweeted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is seeking the GOP presidential nomination.
