Former Vice President Mike Pence has filed to run for president.
He will reportedly launch his bid on Wednesday by holding an event in Iowa and releasing a video.
The White House bid will mean challenging former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. Pence served as vice president during Trump’s tenure, running for re-election alongside Trump during the 2020 presidential contest. Pence had previously served as Indiana governor and as a lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and current North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum are also reportedly slated to announce White House bids this week.
The new contenders will be joining an expanding field that already includes Trump, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Larry Elder, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Trump has referred to Christie as “Sloppy Chris Christie” and called DeSantis “DeSanctimonious” and “DeSanctus.”
The eventual winner of the Republican primary contest will likely go on to face President Joe Biden during the general election. Biden is being challenged by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson.
If Trump becomes the GOP presidential nominee, it would mark the third-straight presidential election cycle that he has secured the Republican nomination. And if Trump and Biden manage to win their respective party’s primaries, Americans could be faced with a rematch of the 2020 presidential contest.
The first Republican primary debate is slated to take place on August 23. According to the Republican National Committee, in order to participate in the debate, each candidate must sign a pledge committing to back the eventual GOP nominee.
