Musk: ‘Widely Diverse’ Council Will Set Moderation Standards

Political News

Elon Musk says changes are coming to Twitter just one day after he closed a deal to purchase the platform for $44 billion.

Musk, who has expressed concern about one-sided content moderation, said a council with “widely diverse viewpoints” will set the platform’s standards for removal.

“Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints,” he tweeted Friday afternoon. “No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.”

AP News reported Friday that Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and Chief Legal Counsel Vijaya Gadde. Sean Edgett immediately after taking control of the company.

Musk’s decision is part of his long-term plan to transform the platform into something drastically different than what it has been. Last week, NewsBusters reported that Musk plans to lay off nearly 75% of the company’s employees.

Earlier in the year, Musk claimed he wanted to purchase the platform to promote free speech online after criticizing the company for unfairly censoring content.

“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy,” he tweeted in March.

He summed up his view on the subject by saying that “[f]ree speech is essential to a functioning democracy.”

So far, it seems that he is adhering to that declaration.
