NBC’s Alcindor Suggests Threat to Democracy More Important than Biden’s Age

Political News

On Sunday morning’s Meet the Press on NBC, during the panel discussion, anchor Chuck Todd was previewing the upcoming 2022 midterm elections and President Joe Biden’s standing in the polls and overall public opinion when he turned to NBC News Washington correspondent and moderator of PBS’s Washington Week Yamiche Alcindor to remark that every swing voter he talks to thinks Biden is too old to run again. Unsurprisingly, Alcindor suggested the mythical “threat to democracy” in America is more important than a President who appears to be losing his mental faculties.

“I’ve asked this question to swing voters all over the country. Some of them are Democrats, some are independents. And they’ve all said the same answer. They all think he’s too old to run again,” Todd asked Alcindor.

Alcindor dismissed the real concerns about Biden’s advanced age and claimed “the key issue will be whether or not them thinking President Biden is too old outweighs them thinking that the future of our democracy is on the line.”

“When I talk to voters, even Democrats who say Biden, he’s a little slower, he’s a little bit quieter, I’m not sure if I want to back him. When they think about the state of our democracy, they’re like that’s the bigger issue here,” she claimed.

She then touted an NBC News poll which allegedly showed “people say the threats to democracy are their number one thing, even above cost of living.”

Alcindor added that “they use words ‘unrecognizable, distrust and that there should be compromise’. Those are words that I think are probably worse for Republicans.”

“While we might have a minority of Republicans who don’t believe that 2020 was fair, they’re the people with the loudest voices,” Alcindor proclaimed. “They’re the people who are still winning the elections. That’s where the candidates are. And I think that to me is probably signaling that Republicans have a bigger problem here.”

Nowhere in her rambling answer did Alcindor explain how American democracy is under attack. Nor did she explain why Americans should care more about that than worrying about reelecting a President who will be eighty two years old by the time he starts his second term as President.

CHUCK TODD: I’ve asked this question to swing voters all over the country. Some of them are Democrats, some are independents. And they’ve all said the same answer. They all think he’s too old to run again.

YAMICHE ALCINDOR: Well the key issue will be whether or not them thinking President Biden is too old outweighs them thinking that the future of our democracy is on the line. When I talk to voters, even Democrats who say Biden, he’s a little slower, he’s a little bit quieter, I’m not sure if I want to back him. When they think about the state of our democracy, they’re like that’s the bigger issue here. In our NBC poll we saw people say the threats to democracy are their number one thing, even above cost of living. I think if you’re a Democrat, even if you’re Joe Biden, looking at this and saying I understand people think maybe I should be more lively, you’re still thinking, they use words unrecognizable, distrust and that there should be compromise.

Those are words that I think are probably worse for Republicans, especially when you think of while we might have a minority of Republicans who don’t believe that 2020 was fair, they’re the people with the loudest voices. They’re the people who are still winning the elections. That’s where the candidates are. And I think that to me is probably signaling that Republicans have a bigger problem here.
