IRONY: MSNBC Angry GOP Won’t Support Jackson Based on Qualifications

Breaking News

On MSNBC’s The 11th Hour, host Stephanie Ruhle proved she has no sense of irony when she whined that Republican Senators won’t follow Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT)’s lead and vote for Biden Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson based on her being qualified to sit on the high court.

Ruhle started off by reading from Romney’s statement which he issued on Monday announcing he would join his fellow moderate Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski in voting for Jackson, “while I do not expect to agree with every decision she may make on the court, I believe that she more than meets the standard of excellence and integrity.”

Then Ruhle turned to former acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal and whined “should that not be the standard for all the Senators?”

“One hundred percent, Stephanie,” Katyal exclaimed. He insisted that he has “enormous respect for the court” and accused Republicans of not feeling the same way “today’s vote by the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee all eleven voting against her tell me that they don’t share that same respect about the Supreme Court.”

“I mean that Senate vote was ridiculous. It amounted to Republicans saying, we’ll never confirm someone who’s not Republican. They basically said the quiet part out loud,” Katyal huffed. “And I’m so glad to see Senators Romney, Murkowski, and Collins stand up to this. You know I say this as someone who did what Romney, Murkowski, and Collins did.

Credit where it’s due, Katyal did claim he supported Neil Gorsuch when Trump appointed him: “you know, I supported Neil Gorsuch much to the chagrin of many of your viewers. But I felt he was qualified. And he was replacing Justice Scalia, so he wasn’t moving the court far in one direction.”

Ruhle tried clarifying her remarks by responding to a video tweet of this segment (above). She claimed that when she said, “all the Senators” she meant Senators in both parties. Even though in the context of the conversation it sounded like she meant all of the Republican Senators. Even if she’s given the benefit of the doubt, Ruhle does have a history of trashing Republican-appointed Supreme Court nominees and lobbying on-air for their defeat.

STEPHANIE RUHLE: Neal, let’s turn to Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation. Cause I want to share part of Mitt Romney’s statement today where he says, quote while I do not expect to agree with every decision she may make on the court, I believe that she more than meets the standard of excellence and integrity. Should that not be the standard for all the Senators?

NEAL KATYAL (Former Acting Solicitor General): One hundred percent, Stephanie. You know I’ve argued forty-five cases at the Supreme Court. I have enormous respect for the court. But today’s vote by the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee all eleven voting against her tell me that they don’t share that same respect about the Supreme Court. I mean that Senate vote was ridiculous. It amounted to Republicans saying, we’ll never confirm someone who’s not Republican. They basically said the quiet part out loud. People like Lindsey Graham. And these people have tried to ruin the Supreme Court. They’ve tried to ruin our crown jewel. And I’m so glad to see Senators Romney, Murkowski, and Collins stand up to this. You know I say this as someone who did what Romney, Murkowski, and Collins did. You know, I supported Neil Gorsuch much to the chagrin of many of your viewers. But I felt he was qualified. And he was replacing Justice Scalia, so he wasn’t moving the court far in one direction. If anything, he might have made it a little more liberal. With, here Justice Jackson replaces Justice Breyer. Very hard to see much difference between the two. The idea that Ted Cruz and others have painted her as extreme, I guess the ancient legal doctrine reverse to such claims as cuckoo. That’s ridiculous. You know, they claim that she’s soft on crime.

She’s supported by every major cop’s organization in the country. They say that she is soft on child pornography. Something that’s been debunked by Fox News analysts. By Fox News analysts Andrew McCarthy and the like. It’s ridiculous. I’m so glad to see these votes. She’s gonna be Justice Jackson later this week, and the country and the court will be much better for it.
