. . . our nonjudgmental pope.

“Pope Francis Laments War in Ukraine Without Taking Sides,” says the Wall Street Journal headline. The article suggests that the pope doesn’t want to offend the Russian Orthodox authorities and fears being seen as an instrument of U.S. foreign policy.

Understandable, I suppose, but, here’s the thing: Unlikely though it may seem, U.S. foreign policy gets it right from time to time, and this is one of those times. We don’t need moral neutrality. We need moral leadership. War isn’t something that just happens to people and countries, like a natural disaster. War is something that people choose, sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for evil ones.

The Ukrainians have invited the pope to visit and see the war for himself. He could set an example for the ages by going — and staying, until the murder stops.
