The Department of Justice considered bringing charges against local Portland officials over alleged mishandling of riots, which have persisted for more than 100 days in the city, a spokesperson told Fox News.

Spokesperson Kerri Kupec told Fox that the DOJ had mulled charges against the Oregon city’s leadership, but did not specify whether such charges were imminent or who specifically the department would target. Kupec said the federal body was probing how city officials “were handling, or not handling” the violent unrest, according to Fox.

Democratic Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment on whether Wheeler was aware of any federal charges against local officials.

The city surpassed 100 straight days of unrest on Sept. 5 and Portland has quickly become one of the riot hotbeds of the country, according to The Oregonian. Roughly one-third of the 300 total federal arrests since the death of George Floyd came from Portland’s city limits, the Associated Press reported Thursday.
