Gone Girl and Cocktail star dies after being hit by ‘electric scooter’ in New York City

Actress Lisa Banes has died aged 65 after being involved in a hit-and-run accident in New York City.

The star, best known for playing Marybeth Elliott in Gone Girl, as well as Bonnie in the Tom Cruise film Cocktail, had been in a critical condition in Sinai Morningside hospital following last week’s accident.

Her colleague, American actor Seth MacFarlane, led tributes by saying her death is “a tremendous loss”.

The pair worked together on comedy-drama series, The Orville.

The Family Guy creator said on Twitter: “I am deeply saddened at the news of Lisa Banes’ passing.

“We had the good fortune to work with her on The Orville this past year.

“Her stage presence, magnetism, skill and talent were matched only by her unwavering kindness and graciousness toward all of us.

“A tremendous loss.”

Singer Jill Sobule also paid tribute on Twitter, sharing a photo of them together and writing: “Just busted. Lisa Banes was magnificent, hilarious, and big-hearted – always helped me through the hard times.

“She was so beloved by so many.”

According to Entertainment Tonight, a representative of Ms Banes confirmed her death in a statement, saying: “We are heartsick over Lisa’s tragic and senseless passing

“She was a woman of great spirit, kindness and generosity and dedicated to her work, whether on stage or in front of a camera and even more so to her wife, family and friends.

“We were blessed to have had her in our lives.”

The 65-year-old was said to be on the Upper West Side of Manhattan near the Lincoln Centre on Friday, 4 June, when she was apparently struck by what was thought to be a motorised scooter or bike.

She was crossing Amsterdam Avenue on the way to visit her former performing arts school Julliard when the incident happened.

At the time of the crash, her manager said she was in a critical condition at Sinai Morningside hospital and was being treated for “substantial injuries”.

Police said they were called to the scene at around 6.30pm local time (11.30pm BST) where they found a “65-year-old female pedestrian lying on the roadway with severe head trauma”.

An NYPD spokesman told Sky News the force had not received any updates as of yet.

Banes also appeared in TV shows like Son Of The Beach and Nashville as well as playing several parts on stage in productions such as High Society and Present Laughter.
