HBO host Bill Maher said this week that the Democrats are the “loser” party and that late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg should have resigned during former President Barack Obama’s presidency.

What are the details?

In remarks on Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Maher — who hosts HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” — said that Ginsburg’s death wasn’t surprising, and that Democrats should have prepared better to avoid the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

In remarks to Maher, host Jimmy Kimmel lauded the HBO host and his panel for the way they pivoted to the news of Ginsburg’s death, which came in the middle of a live taping of “Real Time.”

“Well, it’s not like her death was a shock,” Maher responded.

A clearly flustered Kimmel responded, “Well, it was — it was, though.”

Maher fired back, “Really? She was 100 and had cancer, like, a million times. I mean, she was a great justice, but she should’ve quit. … She should’ve quit.”

Kimmel answered, “You think so?”

“Of course! Because they we wouldn’t have nutso,” he said, referring to newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was approved Monday by the Senate to fill the vacancy left by Ginsburg’s death.

What did Obama say?

Maher added that Obama reportedly told Ginsburg in 2013 that she should retire while he was still in office.

“The Democratic plan for the Supreme Court was ‘Ruth Bader Ginsburg doesn’t die.’ And that’s why they’re such a loser party,” he explained. “I vote for them, but they don’t know how to do politics. I mean, Obama did have her over to the office, you know, when he was still in office to hint. … She should’ve taken the hint. I mean, as great as she was in many ways, that really puts us in a bad place because as I keep trying to say on my show, power begets power. When you lose power, you keep losing it.”

Maher added that Barrett’s recent appointment is especially problematic for Democrats and could have long-lasting implications as soon as next week’s presidential election.

“We lose presidential elections, they appoint justices, so now the Supreme Court is 6-3,” he reasoned. “That’s going to go on for a very long time. If the election winds up in the court, who do you think they’re going to go with? We saw what happened with Bush v. Gore. That’s what I mean. You lose power and then you lose it again.”
