A former Los Angeles Police Department officer who had been arrested for allegedly molesting boys died while in custody, but officials said no foul play was suspected.

Paul Razo was arrested and charged with eight counts of lewd acts on a child after he was accused of sexually assaulting numerous underage boys, two of whom were related to him.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Razo died in custody ten days later.

“The inmate was within our custody when they were transported to Los Angeles County Medical Center for a preexisting medical condition. While being medically treated the inmate passed,” said the sheriff’s department in a statement.

“The cause of death will be determined by autopsy by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner,” they added.

The sexual assaults allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2016 and involved the two children of a woman whom Razo had been dating. The two boys regularly spent the night at his home in Covina and Razo allegedly assaulted them during that time. He was also accused of assaulting two other boys related him who were between the ages of 11 and 13.

“The allegations of sexual abuse against vulnerable children in this case are deeply disturbing and it’s particularly troubling that the defendant was a law enforcement officer at the time,” said District Attorney George Gascón at the time of his arrest.

Razo had also been a Medal of Valor recipient for pulling a man out of a burning car when he was off-duty in 2016. He had worked with the LAPD for more than 25 years before he left the force in March.
