Reid: GOP Saving Women’s Sports is Transphobia Disguised As Feminism

Political News

MSNBC host Joy Reid had a freak out on The ReidOut on Tuesday night over Republicans in state houses around the country passing laws to protect women and girls from having to share bathroom or locker rooms with men or compete with them in sports. Reid referred to this as “anti-trans legislation” and insisted Republicans are “dressing up transphobia as feminism.”

“Republicans are obsessively enacting anti-trans legislation nationwide and when they do it they almost exclusively frame it as a women’s rights issue. Bathroom bills are touted as protecting women’s privacy and ensuring women are safe from the fake danger of trans women in public bathrooms, banning drag shows is about protecting decency and decorum, especially when children are around,” Reid melted down in the opening of her unhinged and fact-free rant.

Reid’s claim that it’s a “fake danger of trans women in public bathrooms” is outrageous. Especially since there have been numerous instances of men pretending to be women going into women’s bathrooms and committing sexual assault

Despite Riley Gaines and hundreds, if not thousands of other women being living proof, Reid tried denying that women face unfair treatment when they are forced to compete against men in sports: “The bills banning trans youth from playing sports are sold under the guise of saving women’s athletics from unfair physical competition. It’s about fairness they say.”

“The Republicans who push anti-trans legislation love to pretend women’s rights are a priority for them. They’re not. They’re simply dressing up transphobia as feminism,” Reid absurdly claimed.

She then tried to insist Republicans are somehow hypocrites for simultaneously wanting to protect the rights of women to have fair competition in sports while also protecting the life of the unborn: “If women’s privacy, safety, and dignity were a priority for Republicans, why are these same Republicans in these same states obstructing life-saving abortion care, forcing their ways into sensitive patient-physician relationships, and criminalizing bathroom access based on how both trans and cis women look?”

Reid never explained how “abortion care” is lifesaving. Lifesaving for whom? Surely not the baby. Reid has serious issues.

JOY REID: Republicans are obsessively enacting anti-trans legislation nationwide and when they do it they almost exclusively frame it as a women’s rights issue. Bathroom bills are touted as protecting women’s privacy and ensuring women are safe from the fake danger of trans women in public bathrooms, banning drag shows is about protecting decency and decorum, especially when children are around. The bills banning trans youth from playing sports are sold under the guise of saving women’s athletics from unfair physical competition. It’s about fairness they say.

Let’s unpack this rhetoric for a bit, shall we? The Republicans who push anti-trans legislation love to pretend women’s rights are a priority for them. They’re not. They’re simply dressing up transphobia as feminism. If women’s privacy, safety, and dignity were a priority for Republicans, why are these same Republicans in these same states obstructing life-saving abortion care, forcing their ways into sensitive patient-physician relationships, and criminalizing bathroom access based on how both trans and cis women look? You have Texas Republicans howling over fairness in women’s sports yet its anti-abortion laws are so dangerous for women, 15 plaintiffs are suing the state saying its abortion bans physically harmed them.
