Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has declared that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) should resign from office.
Feinstein, who will turn 90 next month, has been sidelined for quite some time since getting the shingles earlier this year — some Democratic lawmakers have called for her to step down.
Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California said last month that she has never seen people target an ill male senator in such a manner.
According to CNN, Ocasio-Cortez declared on the Bluesky social media platform that Feinstein “should retire,” adding, “I think criticisms of that stance as ‘anti-feminist’ are a farce. Her refusal to either retire or show up is causing great harm to the judiciary – precisely where repro rights are getting stripped. That failure means now in this precious window Dems can only pass GOP- approved nominees,” Ocasio-Cortez noted, according to the outlet.
Feinstein, who has served in the U.S. Senate for more than three decades, announced in February that she will not seek re-election in 2024.
“When I was first diagnosed with shingles, I expected to return by the end of the March work period. Unfortunately, my return to Washington has been delayed due to continued complications related to my diagnosis,” Feinstein said in a statement last month. “I intend to return as soon as possible once my medical team advises that it’s safe for me to travel. In the meantime, I remain committed to the job and will continue to work from home in San Francisco.”
It is unclear how long it will be until the senator returns to Washington. “Don’t expect her this week,” Feinstein’s spokesperson told Axios.
