Gun jam thwarts robbery attempt at grandmother’s food truck in Houston. She pulled out her own gun and killed the suspect.

Breaking News

Houston police say that a grandmother trying to run her food truck shot and killed a man who pointed a gun through their window in a thwarted robbery attempt.

The Houston Police Department said the incident unfolded in a parking lot on South Main Street on Tuesday at about 2 p.m. in the southwest part of the city.

Police Lt. Bryan Bui told KHOU-TV that the suspect, a Hispanic male, pulled up to the food truck in his black truck and asked a brother and sister inside what they served. When they showed him a bag of chicken, he pulled out a gun.

The brother closed the window to the food truck, so the suspect left his vehicle and slid the window open and reached inside to point his gun at the brother, Bui said.

At that point, the gun jammed when he tried to shoot.

That allowed the sister to shoot him with her gun.

Bui said that the suspect tried to run away before collapsing in the parking lot and dying. He told reporters that no one was in custody and that the owners had the food truck for about a year before the incident.

News video from KHOU showed the window of the suspect’s truck shattered by gunshots.

Derick Howard, an owner of Elite Eats and Cold Treats, told KTRK-TV that his mother and uncle involved in the shooting co-owned the food truck with him. He said his mother is licensed to carry the gun she used to defend herself.

“Nowadays, you have to,” Howard said. “It’s bad.”

Jacqueline Mitchell, a family member of the victims, said that she saw a higher power at work.

“Thank God!” said Mitchell. “She’s a godly woman. That’s why the gun jammed because God jammed it because when (suspect) opened that window, he could have shot her, but it jammed.”

Police released a photograph of the grandmother.

Police are still investigating the incident and gathering evidence, but they don’t expect that the grandmother will be charged in what they have described as a self-defense shooting.

Mitchell garnered another life lesson from the incident.

“People need to get a job and stop trying to rob people because some people are trying to make an honest living,” she said.

The grandmother was treated at a hospital after she suffered a panic attack.
