Black activist says conservatives have ‘weaponized’ the word ‘woke’ to make it a ‘polite way of saying the n-word’

Breaking News

Former MSNBC host Touré Neblett was excoriated online after he claimed that the word “woke” had come to be a polite way for people on the right to say the N-word.

Neblett made the comments from his Twitter account on Wednesday over a debate on a podcast between a conservative commentator and a black liberal.

“At this point woke is a slur. The way the right uses it is an undercover way of saying ‘those people,’ or ‘non-white people,'” he tweeted.

“It’s a polite way of saying the n-word but in this case the n-word includes Blacks, LGBTQ folks, and other marginalized groups,” he added.

“There’s a lot of white fear on the right. Fear of losing status. Fear of people wanting revenge or wanting to upend the social order. Fear seems to be a guiding force on the right,” he added.

His tweet received a dreaded ratio, with far more comments than “likes” in support of his message.

Neblett’s show on MSNBC was cancelled due to low ratings in 2015. He angered many when he claimed that even survivors of the Holocaust benefitted from white privilege. He offered a half-hearted apology later for the comments.

He was also accused of sexual harassment by a makeup artist who said Neblett would make lewd and lascivious comments and suggestions to her when she worked with him in 2017. Neblett responded by claiming that his entire team had participated in “edgy, crass banter” during that time.

“I am sorry for my language and for making her feel uncomfortable in any way,” he said at the time. “As a lead on the show, I should have refrained from this behavior. I have learned and grown from this experience.”
