The Detroit Police Department is in mourning after two officers were found dead inside a residence where an unharmed infant was also found.
Livonia police were flagged down and directed to the residence at the Bell Creek Square condominiums in Livonia on Sunday at about 12:30 p.m. There they found the bodies of 26-year-old Matthew Ethington and 22-year-old Maria Martin.
“One of our officers was on patrol and was contacted, flagged down by a family member about the address behind us here,” said Livonia Police Captain Gregory Yon.
“They wanted wellbeing check on residents at the house. When our officers entered, they discovered two people that were deceased,” he added.
The Livonia Police Department said that it believed Ethington shot and killed Martin and then shot and killed himself. Both were members of the Detroit Police Department for less than five years. Martin reportedly suffered multiple gunshot wounds while Ethington died from a single gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.
Detroit Police Chief James White said the investigation was ongoing but that police believed the incident was a result of a domestic situation.
“It is just senseless. Senseless tragedy. We’re gonna find out exactly what happened as the investigation unfolds. Learn from it, use what we learn to help some of our officers heal from this as well as try to prevent another tragedy like this going forward,” said White.
An infant was also found alive and unharmed in the residence. The baby was delivered to the custody of family members.
“We just don’t know what led to this,” White concluded. “It’s a sad day for our department.”
