Man faces jail time over unusual Cadbury Creme Egg caper

Breaking News

Authorities foiled an “eggs-travagent theft” after a man in Britain attempted to scurry off with about 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs and other chocolates last Saturday, NPR and others reported.

“West Mercia Police has helped save Easter for Crème Egg fans after almost 200,000 of the chocolate treats were stolen from a unit in Stafford Park in Telford,” the department tweeted Monday.

“The eggs-travagent theft took place on Saturday 11 February with the chocolate collection box thought to be worth around £40,000. Along with the crème eggs a number of other chocolate varieties were also stolen,” the department also tweeted, adding a chocolate bar icon.

West Mercia Police ended its chuckle-worthy thread saying the suspect was “presumably purporting to be the Easter bunny.”

Joby Pool, 32, reportedly stole the treat-filled trailer last Saturday. He appeared at Kiddeminster Magistrates’ Court on Valentine’s Day charged with criminal damage and two counts of theft, West Mercia Police said in a statement.

After pleading guilty, he is expected to serve two years in jail. The suspected sweets thief will be sentenced at Shrewsbury crown court on March 14, the Guardian reported Tuesday.

Pool, of West Yorkshire, reportedly used a tractor unit he had stolen last fall to drive off with the trailer full of Cadbury products, including the beloved Easter delights. Pool had previously been convicted of “theft, handling stolen goods, and driving while disqualified” in 2019, the outlet also reported.

The trailer was stolen from a unit in Stafford Park in Telford on February 11. Officers stopped Telford the same day, as he was driving northbound on M42.

The chocolates were reportedly unharmed, according to Pool’s attorney, and “will be in a condition that they can go back on the shelves.”

“This clearly wasn’t spur-of-the-moment offending, if I can put it like that, because he had taken with him a tractor unit and he had to know that the load was there in the first place,” Prosecutor Owen Beale said, according to The Guardian’s reporting.

In all, West Mercia Police estimate the value of the stolen chocolate to be about £40k or roughly $48,176.

In the United States, Cadbury Creme Eggs are made by Hershey. The 1.2-ounce Easter basket classics are made from a milk chocolate shell filled with a soft, fondant, white-and-yellow filling resembling an actual egg. A caramel-filled variety is also available. The Hershey Company’s version is manufactured in a plant in Canada, according to Cadbury’s website.
