Musk Says De-platforming Trump Was A ‘Grave Mistake’

Breaking News

Elon Musk admitted in a series of tweets that Twitter’s decision to permanently ban former President Donald J. Trump was a big mistake.

Musk was discussing Trump’s decision not to tweet after his reinstatement. He argued that Trump’s reinstatement isn’t about the former president actually using the platform but is instead about promoting free speech online.

“I’m fine with Trump not tweeting. The important thing is that Twitter correct a grave mistake in banning his account, despite no violation of the law or terms of service,” he tweeted

He added that the decision alienated “half of America.”

NewsBusters reported earlier in the month that Musk decided to reinstate Trump’s account after a majority of voters in his Twitter poll voted that he should be. Over 15 million people voted in the poll.

“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk said of the decision. “Vox Populi, Vox Dei.”

Musk tweeted Friday that while he has supported liberal candidates for office in the past, he has been disappointed with the presidency of President Joe Biden.

“As a reminder, I was a significant supporter of the Obama-Biden presidency and (reluctantly) voted for Biden over Trump,” he tweeted.

Musk said that ultimately, free speech is more important than politics.

“[F]reedom of speech is the bedrock of a strong democracy and must take precedence,” he added. “My preference for the 2024 presidency is someone sensible and centrist. I had hoped that would the case for the Biden administration, but have been disappointed so far.”

He later said that “the woke mind virus” convinced him to create a counter-narrative.

“I am neither conventionally right nor left…,” he tweeted, adding that “the woke mind virus has thoroughly penetrated entertainment and is pushing civilization towards suicide. There needs to be a counter-narrative.”
