Elon Musk announced Saturday night that former President Donald Trump’s Twitter account would be reinstated and shortly afterward, it was.
The announcement comes after Musk held a poll asking whether Trump should be allowed back on the platform. The results were close as 51.28% voted for the reinstatement and 48.2% voted against.
Early on in the voting, the sentiment was overwhelmingly in favor of letting Trump back on Twitter, then the poll experienced a sudden spike in interest, and the gap narrowed. After more than 15 million votes were tallied, Elon made it official. Trump’s account will be reactivated.
The @realDonaldTrump Twitter account page is back, and those who wish can re-follow him or add the account to lists. But, the former president has publicly said that even if his account was unlocked, he wouldn’t be rejoining Twitter.
Trump referenced the poll on his social media site TruthSocial asking supporters to vote ‘yes’ but then said that “we aren’t going anywhere.”
So, if Trump is to be taken at his word, the entire thing may have been for nothing.
