A fight between two girls on a school bus led to one bringing back a gun according to Louisiana police, and much of the incident was caught on video.
The incident unfolded on Friday at about 2:30 p.m. on a bus with students from the Akili Academy in New Orleans.
Videos posted to social media showed a fight between two girls on the bus, and then another video showed one of the girls trying to come back on the bus while waving a gun.
The bus driver did not let the girl back on the bus and she was later arrested for aggravated assault with a firearm, according to New Orleans police.
The mother of the girl was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and principle to aggravated assault.
The charter school operator released a statement about the incident.
“Crescent City Schools and Akili Academy are horrified by this brazen act of violence that happened off school campus. School buses should be safe places of transport for our young people,” read the statement from Crescent City Schools.
“Police were called Friday afternoon during this incident and police action was taken. The student is not at school, and we are working with NolaPS regarding disciplinary action,” the statement concluded.
NOLA public schools are gun-free zones, and it is unlawful for anyone to intentionally carry a firearm within 1,000 feet of school property.
A second incident of violence erupted between students at the same school on Wednesday.
Investigators say a student used a “taser-like device” to strike two other students during a fight on a school bus. One of the students was unharmed, but the other was hospitalized and may have suffered a concussion after hitting his head during a fall.
The mother of the two injured students, Tamika Calvin, spoke to WWL-TV and said that her children were trying to break up the fight when they were tased.
“Tomorrow, I have to send my children back to school, into the alligator’s mouth because they have to go to school by law, but we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Calvin said.
“I want the Orleans School Board to know that our kids are not safe at school,” she added.
