Video captured the moment daredevil stuntman Jonathan Goodwin was crushed between two vehicles that subsequently burst into flames during an “America’s Got Talent: Extreme” stunt that went woefully wrong.
The stunt took place Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway during rehearsal for the show.
What are the details?
According to a Monday TMZ report, a straitjacketed Goodwin was suspended by his feet on a wire 70 feet in the air during the stunt.
Two cars were suspended on either side of the 41-year-old daredevil swinging back and forth.
The stunt was supposed to see Goodwin free himself and safely plummet to an air mattress 70 feet below the vehicles, but the stunt failed and instead saw the cars smash together, sandwiching Goodwin between them.
Production sources said that the impact caused the cars to burst into flame, and Goodwin fell to the ground — but missed the airbag — and struck his head.
“Our sources say Goodwin was unresponsive after the crash, and people on the set thought he was dead,” the entertainment news website reported. “However, Goodwin was responsive when he was airlifted to a hospital and rushed into surgery.”
Later on Monday, TMZ reported that Goodwin’s injuries include “multiple broken bones in both of his legs, plus cuts all over his face and burns.”
In a statement to the New York Post, a spokesperson for the show said, “He was responsive and was immediately taken to the hospital where he is continuing to receive medical care. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family as we await further updates on his condition.”
Goodwin on Oct. 2 tweeted, “I’m in Atlanta rigging a new stunt which I’m super excited about! Cranes and cars and explosives oh my! What’s everyone else up to?”
