Green Energy Useless during Cold Snaps

Baby, it’s cold outside!

Much of the Midwest and Mountain states are seeing subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions as the polar vortex sweeps through. As far south as Dallas, the temperatures dipped into the 20s. In parts of Minnesota, temperatures dipped to near their lowest levels in a century. In Texas, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is warning of “rolling blackouts” due to extreme cold.

Green energy to the rescue, right?

Hardly. As the Center for the American Experiment, a climate-skeptic Minnesota-based think tank has reported:

Wind turbines are shut down when temperatures are below -22° F because it is too cold to operate them safely. This means it will be too cold for the wind turbines built by the power companies to generate any electricity.”

They note that during the last Polar Vortex in 2019, wind and solar provided almost no power.

Ergo: When you really need power and heating, wind and solar are out of commission.

It’s worse than that. The Minnesota think tank reports:

Wind turbines will actually consume electricity at these temperatures because the turbines use electric heaters in their gearboxes to keep the oil in the housing from freezing, which would cause damage to the turbine. During the 2019 Polar Vortex, wind turbines were consuming 2 MW of electricity. Wind turbines are a liability on the grid when the power is needed most.

Solar power is even less reliable in severe weather conditions. Frigid temperatures are often associated with bright sunny skies, but the temperatures drop way down at night — you know, when there is no sunlight. Also, snow and ice often disable the panels.

What this means is that if — God forbid — Joe Biden realizes his maniacal dream of zero fossil fuels, the people in North Dakota, Minnesota, Chicago, and Boston will be in big trouble. Maybe they can go back to the Middle Ages and build fires.

  1. This is BS, I live 35 miles east of a nuke plant and 45 miles south west of a coal burner and am threatened of black outs because of this green crap energy sources!! We have had colder weather than this and never had problems till all these windmills went up!! Never will they take the place of coal and nuke!!!

  2. Let’s not forget Electric Cars consume power when plugged into the grid, even though they are not operating, to maintain sufficient battery temperature i.e. battery heaters. When you get ready to drive they consume even more power to heat the cabin prior to your drive. Also it is well known the electric vehicles are much less efficient during extreme cold further stressing the electric grid.

  3. Don’t jest about Midwesterners going medieval — I’m shopping for a wood burning stove to install in my living room. Maybe I can build a coal bunker, instead of piling up seasoned hardwood to get the most heat (assuming I can obtain a supply of coal from Montana or the Dakotas).

These Green New Deal fools don’t understand that we must survive the harsh winters by any means necessary. We will burn coal or firewood when they switch over to wind and solar electric power generation. We will bloom our carbon footprints far beyond anything that the fossil fuel industry might cause. And we don’t care at all!

    1. The rabid greenies are already trying to shut down your ability to burn wood/coal to keep alive, special commities make the particulate smoke size of wood burning stoves smaller and smaller every couple of years…the green goblins will not issue you with a licence to keep warm…very soon.
Saving the planet one soul at a time…very much greener than thou.

  4. I would assume that the extreme cold makes the climate change issue a moot point. The Sun, and position of the Earth in its orbit are the main influencing factors of our climate. The climate will change occasionally, but at its own whim, and we must just learn to adjust to it. In a given year or decade the weather will change, but we can not do anything about it. If we could change it, it would be used as a weapon to punish or reward those who disagree with those who can control it. Since no one can control it, those who are in positions of power are trying to convince those who aren’t, that if they do not do as they are told, the climate will change. There is no proof that they are right, but keep repeating the lie, hoping it will become common knowledge. The lemmings will follow the liars over the cliff, although the liars will step aside at the edge, and let the momentum of the lemmings take them all over the cliff.

    1. Spot on Fred, the power and cash to be made out of taxing the planet to keep warm.cool or move a packet of cornflakes from paddock to plate will keep us all…broke and begging to the ‘climate masters/Gods’.

    2. Well said, Fred.
Why do you think that these liberal radicals have gone to great lengths to control the media and now the school curriculums? They know they are pushing a pack of self-serving lies. But if all people are allowed to hear is the same lies over and over, eventually they may come to believe them. So while there still is any free speech still available in this country (mass censorship is already in place), let’s try to educate those people that are still willing to actually think for themselves.

  5. It won’t be long before the Green/Climate Gestapo won’t allow you to burn wood or coal either. So I suggest that you burn what is obviously plentiful: the sh*t that is constantly pouring out of them!

  6. Well, since this ice and freezing temps are a natural disaster is our panty waist fearless leader going to visit the area like most presidents before him? I hear he needs his daily nap in the afternoon. He can sleep on the plane.
