Trump impeachment bid gains Republican support as officers investigated over role in Capitol riots

US News

Democrat momentum behind the second impeachment of Donald Trump has gained senior Republican support.

Senator Pat Toomey said he believed the president had committed “impeachable offences” and that his role in the deadly Capitol riots by a violent mob of his supporters needed thorough investigation.

Mr Toomey also called for Mr Trump‘s resignation – the second Republican to do so since Wednesday’s violence.

His comments came as investigators attempting to find out the identities of all those who stormed the building revealed that some off-duty police officers and firefighters may have been among them.

Police departments in Virginia and Washington state have placed officers on leave, while they examine whether they took part in unlawful acts while away from work.

And fire departments in Florida and New York City have reported to federal authorities allegations that some of their members may also have been present.

Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died when the protesters broke into the building as Congress met to certify the results of the presidential election.

More from Donald Trump

The crowd surged to the domed symbol of American democracy following a rally near the White House, where the outgoing president repeated his false and unproven claims that the election was stolen from him – and urged his supporters to march in force toward the Capitol.

This is what has enraged even previously loyal Republicans like Mr Toomey – and fuelled momentum behind a bid to impeach the president for what would be an unprecedented second time.

Officer crushed in door as mob storm Capitol

There are now 200 co-sponsors for the impeachment legislation that Democratic representative Ted Lieu plans to introduce on Monday.

But while Mr Toomey called for the president to step down, he stopped short of saying whether he would vote to remove him from office at the conclusion of a Senate trial.

He told Fox News: “I do think the president committed impeachable offences, but I don’t know what is going to land on the Senate floor, if anything.”

He said the president’s resignation is the “best path forward”, describing it as “the best way to get this person in the rear view mirror for us”.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has also called for Mr Trump’s resignation.

But Mr Toomey admitted he was not optimistic it would happen before his term ends.

Schwarzenegger likens Capitol rioters to Nazis

Politicians plan to formally introduce articles of impeachment on Monday in the House of Representatives – exactly one week before Democrat Joe Biden becomes the 46th president at noon on 20 January.

If passed by the House, the articles would be transmitted to the Senate for a trial, with senators acting as jurors who would ultimately vote on whether to acquit or convict Mr Trump.

If convicted by a two-third majority, requiring a number of Republicans to vote with the Democrats, then he would be removed from office and succeeded by the vice president.

The president has few fellow Republicans speaking out in his defence, with the former governor of California – and Hollywood legend – Arnold Schwarzenegger among those to have condemned him.

He has become increasingly isolated, holed up in the White House as he has been abandoned in the aftermath of the riot by many aides, leading Republicans, and two Cabinet members – both of whom are women.

  1. Toomey and Murkowski are both members of the swamp that needs to drained !! And as far as Arnold S. is concerned, who cares what he thinks? He is a “has been” for quite some time..

  2. Conservative Republican voters in each state needs to keep in mind their representatives that abandoned their post and turned their backs on President Trump. We do not need these type of weak and spineless agents as representatives of the people’s choice. The Democrats, take their gloves off, unify and fight dirty. The Republican contingent, except for a few, have no stomach to get down to the level of play with the Democrats. More concerned with ‘fair play & courtesy’, that is not part of the Democrat playbook, than fighting the fight, instead they retreat and attack their own. An abdication of duty not only to the President but to the people who voted for and supported him loyally & faithfully, unlike his ‘trusted’ appointees and party seniors.

    1. I agree, the GOP can’t stand together for anything. The house is about to make a shame of our political system with some gutless Republicans going to support them. I do hope their districts will remember that in the 2022 election.

  3. Any senator or representative who goes against Trump will be removed from office when their term is up. As far as Schwarzenegger is concerned he is just another old fool looking to see his name back out in the public. About all he good for is screwing his housekeeper and producing another offspring.

  4. Why is Toomey disregarding the US and Pennsylvania constitutions?

Trump has tweeted Claim GOP Senator Pat Toomey ‘Complicit in’ Massive Election Fraud. (That alone is enough for me)
Toomey recently spoke out against his GOP Senate colleagues, several of whom intend to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory this week. Among those leading the charge are Missouri Senator Josh Hawley and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, both Republicans and known Trump allies. They intend to initiate a formal objection to the electoral vote count when Congress meets to certify the tally on Wednesday. About a dozen additional lawmakers have said they plan to oppose the certification.

“A fundamental, defining feature of a democratic republic is the right of the people to elect their own leaders,” Toomey wrote on Twitter Saturday night. “The effort by Sens. Hawley, Cruz, and others to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in swing states like Pennsylvania directly undermines this right.”

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey says he won’t support efforts to send $2,000 COVID-19 relief checks to most Americans, despite growing pressure on the U.S. Senate.

The Pennsylvania Republican said Wednesday he supports measures to help those in need but he doesn’t think sending $2,000 checks to most Americans is the right way to go.

But it’s OK to given a third world country billions of dollars to buy Russian weapons, weapons that could one day be aimed at our Soldiers.

  6. Well people now you know where you made a mistake by voting for these lazy ,jealous wicked republicans. All of them have something to hide and it will be exposed.Donald J Trump is the of the USA for four more years

  7. This is total bull crap. They have nothing. He was not responsible for the antifa and few stupid conservatives did. Yet it is ok to burn down cities, loot, rob, and kill for months prior to this. I am no longer in support of this America. I hate it all. But mostly for President Trump who has done nothing but ruin the liberal plans for a take over. They have crawled deep into the sewers of evil. All we can do is pray( which hasn’t helped so far). Sorry to be so negative but this is just insane what they are doing. Our conservative reps, have done nothing to stop this with the exception of a few who are enduring abuse for their locality to this country and President Trump.

  8. Mr. Toomey and Ms. Murkowski, you are both Rino’s and sucking the hind liberal T. We know where you stand, remember too that your election times are right around the corner and your time in office is very short. Enjoy it while you can.
