Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was treated again, like a feminist hero on Wednesday’s The View, after she made headlines for a hostile exchange that happened between her and a GOP colleague on the steps of the Capitol. The View hosts pretended not to understand why the radical Democrat faces criticism from conservatives, suggesting it must be because they’re racist sexists that don’t like “strong women.”

Ocasio-Cortez became a hot topic after Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) confronted her Monday over her remarks blaming New York’s spike in crime on people shoplifting bread. Yoho was heard by a reporter telling the Democrat she was “out of her freaking mind,” along with allegedly a profane slur afterwards, (which he has denied.) The View hosts immediately began speculating this was all about sexism. “Is there still a double standard in D.C.?” the narrator teased with the chyron “Sexual Politics.”

When the topic came around, co-host Meghan McCain went off on the Republican, saying he needed to resign if he couldn’t respect strong women. Her co-host Joy Behar instead claimed it was the “right wing mob’s” fault because they treated Ocasio-Cortez like she wasn’t “a person.”

She went on to praise the Democrat for being outspoken and “tough:”

Well, I noticed over the years that she’s been in Congress that she’s kind of a flash point for the right wing mob. They love to go after her for some reason, you know, as if she’s not a person. They use her as some kind of prop to bang at her, and um I think that they’re realizing she is a person. Not only is she a person, she’s a very tough, tough girl. She’s no shrinking snowflake, and she talks to people, and talks to the American people the way men talk, and they don’t like that. They don’t like that. This Yoho or whatever his name is, he needs — he needs to get his act together, and I’m glad he apologized.

Co-host Sunny Hostin continued the sexism talking point, adding her speculation that racism was also involved in the altercation:

I would agree with Joy. She has become this punching bag, and I’m not sure why that is. Is it because she’s young? Is it because she’s a woman? Is it because she’s a woman of color they feel that she’s more vulnerable? They feel that they can take her on in that way, and the fact that she was confronted by a man on the steps of their, you know, where they are employed, paid for by taxpayer dollars is in my view, really remarkable.

Hostin also strongly urged Congress to censure the GOP representative for his alleged slur against Ocasio-Cortez. Of course he shouldn’t have said what he’s accused of saying. But the media has ignored and made excuses for Democrats going on profanity-laced tirades against the President and Republicans, and they’ve done that on national television

McCain ended the segment offering some more glowing praise for the Democrat congresswoman:

She’s become such a lightning rod because she is so effective….but she has broad appeal across the country. I think she has obviously higher ambitions and that’s why she’s such a threat, and like I said, I disagree with her on everything, but this disrespect — specifically I think allotted to young women is ridiculous.
